The Prowl for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie

Rosemary's picture

I’ve found the Holy Grail of Chocolate Chip cookies.

The New York Times created the perfect “Chocolate Chip Cookies” adapted from a baker after sampling the cookies of NYC to find a recipe that could beat the Aunt Jemima of cookies, Mrs. Fields.

I tried out the New York Times’ recipe for the office, and judging from the gasps and “MMM’s!” and people falling on the floor from delight, they were tasty.

Great Old Flicks to Watch

Rosemary's picture

Last winter, my uncle, sister, and I started an old movies tradition, every time I was home on break.

We began with To Catch a Thief, starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant in the south of France, and continued with Grace Kelly and her gorgeous gowns in Rear Window. For Dr. Zhivago, the three-hour movie filled with snow, war, and snow, my uncle printed up pages of Russian Revolution history from Wikipedia to give us some more “depth.”

But was it good. Ever since, I’ve been hooked on the classics—great for rainy summer nights.

More Ways to Go Green this Weekend

Rosemary's picture

With all the events this weekend—Rothbury, Comerica Cityfest, fireworks, heck, even the Jonas Brothers are coming—I’ve got two more to add to your calendar, and they’re green-friendly!

National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, July 5-12.

Sprinkle in the 4th with Cupcakes

Rosemary's picture

Every 4th of July, my mom makes the classic “flag cake:” shortcake bread, vanilla frosting, blueberries for the stars and strawberries for the stripes. It’s an American classic.

If you want to mix it up for the 4th, try cupcakes.

Use cupcake recipes like “Dogs and Burgers Cupcakes” (pleasant sounding, I know) or “Lady Liberty Cupcakes,” from familyfun.com

Write out Your "Love List"

Rosemary's picture

A few weeks ago, my mom gave me a copy of an Oprah article called, “The Love List.” In it, an older single woman writes down 100 things she wants in a man, even down to his gray socks. When her future husband read the list five years later, he said he had all the qualities but two.

Now this might seem like a “Chicken Soup for the Soul” story or my mom desperately trying to marry me off, but I’ve heard many people use “the list” for anything they want: jobs, vacations, a dream house, children (just kidding).

Rock out this Summer

If you’re like me, and your power is still out, your iPod is juiced out and you’re left eating stale pistachios and saltines, you may need a little musical pick-me-up. And here’s your fix: the bazillion music festivals going on in Detroit and across the country. They’re something to look forward to until you get your iPod rockin’ again.

First up is the Rock City Festival, going on June 12-14. About 50 national and local bands will appear at the Majestic Theatre, the Magic Stick and the Garden Bowl. You can buy $30 passes or $20 single-day passes.

Where to celebrate the Wings' win

After the Stanley Cup win (wahoo!) Wednesday night, the Detroit Red Wings partied hardy at a private airport hangar in Romulus. Looking for your own way to celebrate the Wings’ win that doesn’t involve airports?

Head to the championship parade Friday at 11 a.m. It begins at the Hockeytown Café on Woodward and ends with a rally at Hart Plaza. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is expected to attend.

Nisreen Fakhouri, of Allen Park, said she plans to go to the parade tomorrow and then later to the Baltimore, 1234 Randolph, a popular bar in Greektown.

Work wear: Great gift for new graduates

Rosemary's picture

Today is my first day at Strut, and I wanted to look sharp. I imagined myself walking into the office with my hair blowing back in the wind, a latte in one hand and leather purse in the other, my shiny black heels clapping at the ground (theme music would be nice too).

Yet when looking for my Official Job Outfit, I discovered I had no clothes. I reached into my closet yesterday to find gypsy skirts, dinky old flats, and blouses that should be worn to a teacher-professor frat party.

My mom and I scurried off shopping to a few places to update my work clothes. For anyone pondering what to buy college graduates or friends reentering the work place, I suggest checking out these places to find decent work wear presents. Hey, it beats shoving a check in the mail.
