Ignorance and irony

Allison's picture

During my daily late-night Web surfing session Tuesday, I stumbled upon this gem – a photo of a woman protesting amnesty for undocumented immigrants and holding a misspelled sign that reads: "Make English America's offical [sic] Language."

Oh, the irony. I feel like I see photos such as this one at least once every six months, and it always begs the questions: Does the person involved ever realize the irony of the situation (since it hinders their argument)? Why not practice what you preach? When has it ever been OK to force people to conform to one way of living? Shouldn't we be worrying about more important issues, such as the economy, global warming, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, rather than how well someone can speak English?

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but the level of ignorance exhibited in this photo is inexcusable (OK, I'm a copy editor, and misspelling words also falls under the inexcusable category). Arguing against amnesty for undocumented immigrants is one thing but to do so solely based on their English skills is just a thinly veiled form of racism and has no place in our society today. Freedom of speech is one thing, but this protester's sign sets a horrible example for younger generations and fosters an environment of intolerance. But that's just my two cents. What do you think?
