Thanks, Mom!
In honor of Mothers' Day this weekend, here's a shout-out to all the fabulous moms out there. Below, colleagues from the Strut offices share what they love most about their mother, what quirky habit they learned or inherited from her and the best advice she ever gave them. Tell us yours!
Nicole Adamson, contributing editor
Becky Wall, designer
I love: that she would do anything for her kids at the drop of a hat.
Quirky habit: Organizing sock drawers
Best advice: To give guys a second chance after a bad first date, because they may have been nervous. That’s actually how I ended up with my husband Chris. Our first date didn't go too well, but I took my mom’s advice and we went out on a second date. We had a blast and now we’ve been married almost nine years!
Ruth Messing, designer
I love: that she loves me unconditionally – no matter how many times I screw up.
Quirky habit: Being a packrat
Best advice: Keep laughing.
Allison Lucy, copy editor
I love: that she's completely selfless and will do anything for anyone.
Quirky habit: The way she runs (like a duck) and her goofy sense of humor
Best advice: To always have faith in yourself and look on the bright side
Dolly Moiseeff, editor of Signature Grosse Pointe (one of Strut's sister publications)
I love: how when we were kids, she was always an adventurer. She would load us in the car and take us to the beach, the circus, the ice capades. This was in the '50s when other moms weren't driving, so in that respect, she was absolutely fearless.
Quirky habit: Not liking to clean the house
Best advice: To marry my husband
Sammie Rutkowski, intern
I love: that she takes care of everything and doesn't expect to be acknowledged for it.
Quirky habit: No sense of direction
Best advice: Every morning when she'd drop us off for school, she'd say "Smile, have fun, be good and learn something."
Tracy Balazy, copy editor
I love: that she was very accepting of everyone. Even when we had kind of scurvy neighbors, she'd take our old toys and baby clothes and share them with less fortunate people in the neighborhood.
Quirky habit: I fold my towels the same way she did -- the nice, neat edge always shows on the outside. If my husband folds them wrong, I'll take them out and refold them. And I'm not like that.
Best advice: If you live your whole life now, you'll have nothing to look forward to later.
Mike Ortiz, designer
I loved: that she had an enormous heart and would help anyone in any way she possibly could
Quirky habit: I worry about everything -- I guess you could say she made me a critical thinker.
Best advice: To care for and treat others with respect
Stay tuned - more to come ...

Christine -- Why I love my mom!
I love: how she was always there when we needed. Nothing like a hug and a kiss on the forehead to check for a fever. Even now, at 35, I can put my head on her shoulder and cuddle if I need her. I also love her confidence and strength. Right now she's walking 500 miles across Spain alone! That's something to admire.
Quirky habbit: She is the "lipstick police". She is a firm believer that if you are feeling blue a little lipstick will cure all. Don't leave home without it! I'm sure she has lipstick in her pocket now, even on the trails of Spain.
Best advice: In college when I was struggling studying for an accounting test she remembered me telling her we could drop one test grade. She suggested I close my books, go to bed, and not worry about the test the next day. She always encourges me not to worry.
Why I love my mom
I love that she makes everybody feel welcome in her house, even at times when you might think I'm asking too much.
Quirky habit: Even in this day and age of free long distance calling, if you call her long distance you can sense her wanting to end the call as quickly as she can (to save on those non-existent long distance fees).
Best advice: Actually, it was more of a curse, and it was, "I hope you have three boys and they're all like you." Turns out I have two boys (and one girl), and both boys clearly didn't fall very far from the tree. But, because she warned me, I can deal with them.
