Capture spring images in Heritage Park, and learn how to use the
seven points of focus/framing, control depth of field, look at light,
and study how it moves and changes color. Reflectors will be used
to enhance natural light. Be sure to dress for the outdoors,
and bring a 35mm or digital camera.

Huron-Clinton Metroparks

Where: the 13 Metroparks in southeast Michigan

Socialize, exercise and gain experience while lending a hand at the parks, especially at the nature centers and golf courses. Volunteers who reach a designated number of hours receive a Metroparks annual permit, free use of some facilities and an invitation to recognition dinners in the parks. Volunteer for a single project or on an ongoing bais.

Holy Hip-Hop! New Paintings by Alex Melamid

The exhibition features life-size portraits by Russian-born American painter Alexander Melamid of hip-hop icons, such as Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Kanye West, among others.

Barbie: Dolls Empowering Generations of Girls

Where: Birmingham Historical Museum and Park, 556 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham

This exhibition presents the social history of the Barbie doll, as well as trivia about her. Dearborn collector Helen Mamalakis shares her Barbie collection. The exhibit includes one of the earliest dolls from 1961, to illustrate the evolution of one of America’s most popular toys.

Bookstock Used Book & Media Sale

Shoppers and collectors may get the first look at the Bookstock Used Book & Media Sale Pre-Sale at 8:45-11:45 a.m. on April 6. Books will be sold for half-price on April 13. Bookstock carries donated used books, DVDs, CDs, books on tape, magazines and records, and all proceeds will benefit literacy and education projects in metro Detroit.

Dealing with Mean Girls Behavior

Where: Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lakeshore Drive, Grosse Pointe Farms

This mother-daughter workshop, offered by Girls Empowered, teaches methods for dealing with teasing, bullying, exclusion and cliques. Moms will learn strategies for creating a supportive environment and self-esteem for their daughters. Residents of all communities are welcome to attend. Girls ages 6-9 attend the workshop with their moms from 1-2:30 p.m., and girls ages 10-12 attend the workshop from 2:30-4 p.m.

Art Show Fundraiser for Gilda's Club Metro Detroit

Where: A Woman's Image, 43273 Garfield Rd., Clinton Township

A Woman's Image, an organization that assists men, women and children suffering hair loss because of chemotherapy, alopecia or for other reasons, is hosting an art show fundraiser to benefit Gilda's Club Metro Detroit. Gilda's Club is a free cancer support center for men, women and children dealing with cancer. The fundraiser will feature works by local artists, such as Detroit acrylic and water colorist, April "Pril" Barkley, as well as nationally known graphic designer Frank Beven, among others. Wine, cheese and other refreshments will be served. There also will be a raffle and door prizes. All proceeds will benefit Gilda's Club.

Cost: $5 suggested donation
