Where: The 13 Metroparks in southeast Michigan

Socialize, exercise and gain experience while lending a hand at the parks, especially at the nature centers and golf courses. Volunteers who reach a designated number of hours receive a Metroparks annual permit, free use of some facilities, and an invitation to recognition dinners in the parks. Volunteer for a single project or on an ongoing basis.

More than 45 fine-art crafters will display original works, including paintings, glass, textiles and jewelry. There will be live lunchtime entertainment Friday.

Robin Roberts, co-anchor of ABC’s Good Morning America, is the featured speaker for the 37^th annual event. Proceeds from the tickets will help fund student scholarships.

Where: Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit

The exhibition will explore the Ashcan school’s celebration of vibrant and diverse leisure activities through nearly 80 of their most significant canvases. The Ashcan school artists depicted the lower levels of the socio-economic scale, the raw, unvarnished people who lived and toiled in New York during the turn of the 20th century. While this material represents one aspect of these artists’ oeuvre, it’s not representative of the entire spectrum of their work. Among the subjects addressed were the leisure activities available to people of various social strata.

A group of metro Detroit artists will define the word “icon” through photography, painting or sculpture.

Learn the story of Queen Victoria’s connection with India and honor her birthday. Musician Manjula Verma will play the sitar, and the Laasya School of Indian Dance will perform. Tea, scones, tea sandwiches and desserts will be served.

Playwright Carey Crim’s Growing Pretty follows Lucy Keen as she deals with her quirky family, having a boy for a best friend, love and self-image. Lucy discovers that the rocky road of being 12 soon transforms into the freedoms of adulthood as she attempts to become an artist.

Where: Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, 1516 S. Cranbrook Rd., Birmingham
This four-session workshop for adults teaches how to decorate pots using creative techniques with slips, stains, glazes and cold wax. Students make test forms in the first class, then apply surface techniques and glazing in the other classes. Students are welcome to bring small, unglazed bisqueware pieces to practice on. Students should have basic knowledge of wheel-throwing and hand-building.
