Chocolate: The Exhibition

Plunge into the history of chocolate (remember, dark chocolate’s loaded with antioxidants!), and while you’re there, take a hike down the fitness paths at the museum and Greenfield Village.

Cost: Exhibit free with museum admission: nonmembers 62 and older, $13; ages 13-61, $14; ages 5-12, $10; 4 and younger, free. Nonmember parking is $5 per vehicle.

Life’s Pleasures: The Ashcan Artists’ Brush with Leisure, 1895-1925

Give it a Rest: People at Play in American Prints and Drawings, 1890-1945

Much of this exhibition is drawn from the DIA’s collection and contains prints by John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn O. Coleman and Martin Lewis. Their images depict casual, daily life, featuring people at the circus, beach, boxing matches, reading, walking, dancing or relaxing, among other activities. Individual images by other artists will be displayed around these works, as well as colorful lithographs created by Edward Penfield and William Carqueville for magazines. The exhibition also features works from the late 1930s by artists who were employed through the Works Progress Administration, a federal economic relief program.

Kenro Izu: Sacred Places

Kenro Izu: Sacred Places features more than 50 black-and-white photographs of spiritual sites around the world. The majority of the exhibition consists of images of Buddhist and Hindu sites in India, the Himalayas, Indonesia, Thailand and China, among other places. The exhibition also includes images of the pyramids of Giza in Egypt and the stone statues on Easter Island, as well as photos of sacred sites in Syria, Jordan and Scotland.

Brows For Bow Wows

10 percent of all brow shaping proceeds during this period will be donated to the Michigan Humane Society.

A Place at the Table

 The Michigan Chapter of Women's Caucus for Art inaugural exhibition is an all media juried exhibition which examines the female's symbolic place "at the table." The artists investigate the places they sit or are barred from sitting at in society, politics and their own personal lives. Featuring artists Brenda Oelbaum, Patricia Izzo and Anne Sheill. Until August 10, open during gallery hours (Mondays-Thursdays & Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Fridays, 10 a.m. -9 p.m.; Sunday, 12 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.)

Considering Detroit

Considering Detroit, MOCAD’s latest exhibition, will explore contemporary art in the Detroit area. The exhibition, the first in a series, aims to document the recent history of the region’s art, according to MOCAD.

Fill the Frame Exhibit: Lawrence Street Gallery

When: Show dates, July 2 - 25. Opening Reception (public invited) Fri., July 11, 6 - 9 p.m.; Regular gallery hours are Wed, Thurs & Sat, Noon - 5. Fri, Noon - 9 p.m. 

100 artists were given a 14x21 inch frame to fill as they desired. The exhibit is a collection of works in many mediums, from acrylic to mixed media and beyond from local metro Detroit artists who took the gallery up on its challenge. 

Where: Lawrence Street Gallery is at 22620 Woodward, Ferndale (East side of Woodward, two blocks south of 9 Mile).

Orchard Lake Fine Art Show Artist Preview Party

Where: Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 3535 Indian Trail, Orchard Lake

Get a sneak peek at the artwork to be featured at the Orchard Lake Fine Art Show during the Artist Preview Party on Friday night. Artwork will be available for purchase, and proceeds benefit Orchard Lake Schools. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served, and there also will be live entertainment.
