Where: Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit Much of this exhibition is drawn from the DIA’s collection and contains prints by John Sloan, George Bellows, Glenn O. Coleman and Martin Lewis. Their images depict casual, daily life, featuring people at the circus, beach, boxing matches, reading, walking, dancing or relaxing, among other activities. Individual images by other artists will be displayed around these works, as well as colorful lithographs created by Edward Penfield and William Carqueville for magazines. The exhibition also features works from the late 1930s by artists who were employed through the Works Progress Administration, a federal economic relief program. Start: 10:00 am

5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit Kenro Izu: Sacred Places features more than 50 black-and-white photographs of spiritual sites around the world. The majority of the exhibition consists of images of Buddhist and Hindu sites in India, the Himalayas, Indonesia, Thailand and China, among other places. The exhibition also includes images of the pyramids of Giza in Egypt and the stone statues on Easter Island, as well as photos of sacred sites in Syria, Jordan and Scotland. Start: 11:00 am

The exhibition, the first in a series, aims to document the recent history of the region’s art, according to MOCAD. Various artists and groups, such as Ellen Cantor, Maurice Greenia, Jim Gustafson, Allie McGhee, Heather McGill, Gordon Newton and artist collective TIME STEREO, will be highlighted in the 2008 exhibition. Get yer picnic basket and out to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. Their music series kicks off tonight with The Beat Club: A Beatles Tribute. Concerts take place on the front lawn facing Lake St. Clair and are on Wednesday evenings rain or shine (in case of rain, the concert will take place indoors). Grounds open at 6 p.m. Concerts start at 7:30 p.m. Cost: Prices are $8 per person and $4 each for ages 10 and under. (Alas, there is no youth discount for tonight's Beat Club concert).
